We Will Never Forget: On September 11, 2001, nineteen militants associated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airliners in a coordinated terrorist attack, striking the World Trade Center towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, while a fourth hijacked plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The attacks claimed 2,977 victims, including 147 residents of Monmouth County. Following the destruction, residents gathered at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook in Atlantic Highlands, the highest natural point on the Atlantic coastal plain, to view the smoke rising over Raritan Bay, which eventually led to the creation of the county's official 9/11 Memorial at the site.
