🏖️ Monmouth History: On September 4, 1843, members of the Fourierist utopian movement formally established the North American Phalanx near Phalanx Road in present-day Colts Neck. It became one of the longest-lasting secular communal living experiments in 19th-century America.

Thursday’s Only in Monmouth: originating around 1720 as a modest, one-and-a-half-story Dutch-framed pioneer cabin, Portland Place in Middletown evolved over centuries from a 200-acre working farm into an elegant, expanded country estate perched high on a bluff overlooking the Navesink River. Uniquely passed down through eight generations of the Quaker Hartshorne family, the property maintains its original historic character and rich interior exhibits showcasing antique furnishings, regional artwork, and early colonial history. In 2008, Hartshorne descendant Daniel Ward Seitz bequeathed the home and its surrounding century forest to the county, permanently reuniting the historic house with the over 800 preserved acres of Hartshorne Woods Park.
