For years, Jennifer Shannon could walk into a garage sale, spot the one object everyone else overlooked, and somehow find herself in the middle of a murder investigation. Now Hallmark is doing a little treasure hunting of its own. Seven years after the network cut ties with Lori Loughlin and stopped development of Garage Sale Mysteries, the actress and one of Hallmark’s best-known mystery franchises are coming back.
Garage Sale Mysteries: Murder Takes the Stage will have its worldwide premiere Saturday, Sept. 19, at 8 pm on Hallmark Channel and will stream the following day on Hallmark+. Loughlin returns as antiques expert and amateur sleuth Jennifer Shannon, joined by Sarah Strange and Steve Bacic. Kevin O’Grady and Connor Stanhope are also in the cast. Hallmark identifies the new installment as Movie No. 17.
But Jennifer Shannon isn’t the only familiar character Loughlin is bringing back.
Hallmark has also announced that Loughlin will return as Abigail Stanton in Season 14 of When Calls the Heart, the series she helped launch in 2014. She is scheduled to appear in six of the season’s 12 episodes when the show returns in 2027. Hallmark’s head of programming, Michelle Vicary, said the network felt Season 14 was the right time to continue Abigail’s story.
That means Murder Takes the Stage isn’t simply the revival of an old mystery series. It marks the beginning of a much broader return to Hallmark for an actress who, for years, had been one of the network’s most recognizable faces.
And Jennifer’s first new case is particularly fitting for mystery fans. She belongs to a true-crime book club whose members decide to reenact the Lizzie Borden case. The pretend murder takes a very real turn when one member of the group is killed.
For viewers who have forgotten just how long Jennifer Shannon has been finding trouble among other people’s castoffs, the franchise dates to 2013. The character grew out of author Suzi Weinert’s Garage Sale Stalker, which was inspired by Weinert’s own longtime fascination with garage and estate sales. Weinert says a Hollywood producer selected the book for a Hallmark television movie, and its success led to an ongoing series starring Loughlin.
It was an unusually durable formula. Jennifer wasn’t a police detective or private investigator. She was a woman with an eye for antiques, secondhand treasures, and details other people missed. Garage sales, estate finds, and seemingly ordinary objects became doorways into murder investigations, giving Hallmark a mystery series with a personality all its own.
Then everything stopped.
In March 2019, Hallmark’s then-parent company Crown Media severed its relationship with Loughlin following her indictment in the college admissions scandal. The company specifically said it had stopped development of all productions involving her, including Garage Sale Mysteries.
In 2020, Loughlin pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud in connection with securing her daughters’ admission to the University of Southern California as purported athletic recruits. She was sentenced to two months in prison, two years of supervised release, a $150,000 fine, and 100 hours of community service.
For years, a return to Hallmark seemed unlikely. Now the network isn’t treating it quietly. Its current promotional material declares that “Garage Sale Mysteries are back,” and the new movie is being featured as part of Hallmark Channel’s Fall Into Love lineup. Hallmark is also promoting Loughlin’s upcoming return to When Calls the Heart, making clear that this is more than a one-movie reunion.
There’s also something especially appropriate about Jennifer Shannon being the character who helps reopen this chapter. Her entire fictional career has been built around looking twice at things other people have discarded and discovering that they still have a story left in them.
Seven years later, Jennifer Shannon does too.
