On this day in 1778, George Washington established his headquarters in Englishtown at the Moses Laird House. Following one of the longest single-day battles of the Revolutionary War, Washington regrouped his army, assessed the outcome, and began the process that would ultimately lead to the court-martial of Major General Charles Lee for his actions during the battle. The move to Englishtown marked the beginning of the army's post-battle operations after its successful stand against the British at the Battle of Monmouth.
