Friday’s Only in Monmouth: Tillie, the iconic grinning face of Asbury Park, was painted on the exterior walls of Palace Amusements during the winter of 1955–1956 as a local version of the famous “fun face” from George C. Tilyou’s Steeplechase Park in Coney Island (the name “Tillie” is a nod to Tilyou). After the Palace closed in 1988 and was demolished in 2004 (with the original mural partially rescued by a grassroots “Save Tillie” campaign), a replica was painted on the nearby Wonder Bar building, which is the version still visible there today.
