Kevin Smith's Smodcastle Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands is bringing an acclaimed independent film back to the big screen for one night only. On Friday, July 17, at 7:30 pm, DARUMA returns as part of a nationwide Disability Pride Month celebration, giving Monmouth County moviegoers a chance to enjoy an inspiring story while supporting a meaningful cause.
The limited theatrical run will benefit the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, with a portion of ticket proceeds helping to fund innovative paralysis research, advance quality care, and provide resources for individuals and families living with paralysis.
Executive produced by Academy Award winner Peter Farrelly, DARUMA has been praised for its authentic representation of disability. The film stars Tobias Forrest, an actor living with paralysis, and John W. Lawson, a double amputee, making it the first U.S. narrative feature to star two authentically cast lead actors with disabilities in roles that are not centered on "overcoming" disability. Forrest received the Media Access Award for Best Actor, while Lawson earned the Grand Jury Prize for Best Actor at the Slamdance Film Festival.
The story follows Patrick, a man living with paralysis who unexpectedly discovers he has a daughter from a relationship before his injury. Joined by his reluctant neighbor Robert, a double amputee, the pair set off on a cross-country journey that explores family, forgiveness, and second chances. The cast also includes Blue Bloods actress Abigail Hawk and Golden Globe winner Barry Bostwick.
The one-night screening gives Monmouth County audiences a chance to experience a critically acclaimed independent film while helping support the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation's mission to improve the lives of people living with paralysis. Tickets are available through Smodcastle Cinemas.
