🏖️ Jersey History: This week in 1968, in front of 39,042 fans, a horse named Balustrade was the winner of the first Monmouth Invitational Handicap race at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport. That race, known today as the Haskell Invitational Stakes, offers a $1,000,000 purse.

One hundred years ago today, a 20-year-old woman dove into the cold waters of the English Channel and changed sports forever. For more than 14 hours, Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle battled rough seas, powerful currents, and frigid water before becoming the first woman ever to swim from France to England. Few realize that one of the greatest accomplishments in sports history has a Monmouth County connection, and soon Highlands will honor the woman behind the history. (Full Story)
