Good Morning, Monmouth County! ☀️

🏖️ Monmouth History: This week in 1780, Loyalist guerrilla leader Colonel Tye (a formerly enslaved man named Titus from Colts Neck) led a surprise raid on Patriot militia leader Joshua Huddy's home in Colts Neck. Huddy fought off the raiders for hours alongside a young servant, Lucretia Emmons, before being captured. During a rescue attempt by Middletown militia at the shore, Huddy escaped into the ocean while Tye received a wrist wound that resulted in fatal tetanus days later.

Yesterday’s Only in Monmouth: Inside the former Wilson Hall (renamed the Great Hall at Shadow Lawn) at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, visitors enter a staggering 130-room French Renaissance palace centered around a three-story central court framed by a massive stained-glass skylight, sweeping marble staircases, and 24-karat gold-leaf detailing. Originally built in 1929 for F.W. Woolworth president Hubert Templeton Parson, the palatial interior incorporates imported European treasures, including hand-carved Italian limestone arches, intricate wrought-iron balustrades, and a grand Aeolian organ embedded within the paneled walls.
