Heavy rain and flash flooding swept across the county Monday morning, leading to a partial roof collapse at the BJ's Wholesale Club on Route 35 in the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township. Emergency crews responded just after 11 am after a section of the roof gave way while customers and employees were inside the store.

Authorities said 27 people were inside the building at the time of the collapse. Two individuals were briefly trapped by debris but were able to free themselves before first responders arrived. Search teams, including Monmouth County Urban Search and Rescue personnel, interior drones, and K-9 units, conducted thorough searches of the building and confirmed that everyone had been safely accounted for.

Officials believe the collapse was related to the intense storms that dumped several inches of rain across parts of Monmouth County in just a few hours, causing widespread flash flooding and hazardous travel conditions. Residents were urged to avoid the area around Route 35, Park Avenue, and Deal Road while emergency crews secured the building and investigated the damage.

Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden praised the coordinated response by local, county, and regional emergency agencies, calling the incident "another reminder of how quickly severe weather can create dangerous and unpredictable conditions." The BJ's store remains closed as engineers assess the structural damage and determine when it can safely reopen.
