Yesterday’s Only in Monmouth: The Allen House in Shrewsbury was built around 1710 as a summer residence for the wealthy Stillwell family of New York on land earlier acquired by Quaker Judah Allen. In 1754, it was sold to Josiah Halstead, who converted it into the Blue Ball Tavern—the town’s most noted tavern and a community hub for meetings, courts, and social life. After later serving as a doctor’s office, pharmacy, and general store, the house is now a museum operated by the Monmouth County Historical Association and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
