Yesterday’s Only in Monmouth: The General Store (Howell Works Company Store) at the Historic Village at Allaire in Allaire State Park, Wall Township. Built in 1835 at a cost of about $7,000, this substantial multi-story brick structure was one of the largest general stores in New Jersey at the time and served as the commercial and social hub of the self-sufficient company town known as Howell Works (later Allaire Village). Founded by industrialist James P. Allaire in 1822 on a site with earlier iron-working activity, the village produced pig iron and cast-iron goods from local bog ore for Allaire’s New York marine engine works.
